Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) is the leading cause of vision loss in children, with babies and young children being more vulnerable to developing the condition following brain damage. CVI can have a substantial impact on a child’s quality of life by causing long-term vision complications. Due to CVI not being widely recognized or diagnosed, medical professionals believe that many children who have CVI are most likely undiagnosed or were misdiagnosed with other disabilities, preventing them from receiving necessary medical treatment.

For those reasons, I intend to introduce a bill package targeted at raising awareness of CVI to help children receive the treatment that they need. These bills will include requiring a child’s healthcare provider to provide educational materials regarding CVI to parents of children with certain conditions and requiring healthcare insurance companies to provide coverage of CVI testing.
