In 2022, an estimated 20,000 infants passed away in the United States alone. The infant mortality rate among Black babies in particular is twice as high as the national average. The loss of a child can be abrupt and has devastating impacts on parents and their families. Infant mortality and pregnancy loss leave behind grieving parents who often feel that they must mourn in silence or be forced to rush their healing process.

October was first recognized as “National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month” in 1988 at the federal level to support and honor the infants who have passed and their families. To join this effort in remembering the lives that were lost, I plan on introducing a resolution that would designate October 2026 as “Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution and acknowledging the parents in this Commonwealth who grieve in silence for their babies.
