Often occurring when part of the skull does not form properly, Chiari malformations are characterized by the cerebellum being pushed down into the spinal canal and the obstructed flow of cerebrospinal fluid. These malformations may be congenital or acquired and sometimes co-occur with other conditions like spina bifida, hydrocephalus, syringomyelia, and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Unfortunately, there is no cure for a Chiari malformation and, while some individuals who have a Chiari malformation may be asymptomatic and stay asymptomatic their entire lives, others may require surgery to alleviate symptoms.

To raise awareness of Chiari malformations and related diseases, I plan to introduce a resolution designating the month of September 2026 as “Chiari Malformation Awareness Month.” This resolution will encourage everyone in our Commonwealth to remain educated on Chiari malformations and treatment options.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution.
