I will soon introduce a resolution designating June 15, 2026, as “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania. This day is observed to raise awareness about the forms and causes of elder abuse, highlight its impact on older adults, and to reinforce the shared responsibility to safeguard the well-being of older Pennsylvanians.
Over the last five years, the Pennsylvania Department of Aging has recorded an 84% increase in “Reports of Need” (RON). In fiscal year 2024-25, there were 66,719 reports statewide, a 14% increase from the previous fiscal year. Of the 52,679 reports investigated, 15,777 were substantiated. The most common substantiated allegations included self-neglect, caregiver neglect, financial exploitation, emotional abuse and physical abuse. Despite these numbers, elder abuse remains significantly underreported.
Pennsylvania is home to over 3.5 million adults age 60 and older, representing nearly 30% of our population. Half of the victims identified in FY 24-25 lived alone, placing them at greater risk of social isolation and related poor health outcomes.
Financial exploitation continues to grow at an alarming rate, often affecting older adults who may be experiencing cognitive decline and therefore, have increased difficulty recognizing or responding to irregular or suspicious financial activity. Emotional and physical abuse continue to be serious issues, contributing to diminishing quality of life and increased vulnerability, and can have lasting impacts on the families of older adults.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day provides an opportunity to reflect upon and commit to utilizing every tool and resource available to ensure Pennsylvania’s older adults can live with confidence, dignity, and peace of mind knowing some of their most vulnerable years are free from fear, hurt, and harm.
Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution designating June 15, 2026, as “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania.
