Since the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission in 2010, spending and, arguably, influence of wealthy donors and corporations in our elections has increased exponentially. In 2024 alone, federal elections saw over $4 billion in outside spending, nearly 12 times more than the amount spent in 2008. This trend has caused the voices of ordinary voters in our elections to be drowned out by corporations.
 
It is time for us to rein in the nearly limitless influence that corporations have over our elections. That is why we are introducing legislation to revoke the power of corporations in Pennsylvania to make political expenditures.  A similar measure is currently being considered in Montana which does not violate the holding of Citizens United, since the permissible actions of a corporation are defined by the state which charters the corporation. This legislation will mitigate the influence that unlimited dark money has on our elections and help ensure that elected officials are accountable to their voters, rather than corporations.
