In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that would provide Pennsylvanians with the explicit right to access and use fertility treatments.

In U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ concurring opinion in the case that overturned Roe v. Wade, he wrote that the Court should reconsider its decision in Griswold v. Connecticut, which declared that married couples had a right to use contraception.  I believe that we, as a General Assembly, should do all we can to ensure that Pennsylvanians’ family planning decisions remain personal ones.

While Pennsylvania statute prohibits the Commonwealth from interfering with “the use of medically appropriate methods of contraception,” the right to use fertility treatments is not addressed, which is why I believe my proposed legislation is important.

For some, in vitro fertilization and other assisted reproductive technologies are their only hope for getting pregnant.  By codifying the right to access and use fertility treatments, we can provide Pennsylvanians with a sense of security in knowing that options are available to those who struggle with infertility.

Please join me in support of this important legislation.
