This bill amends the Prothonotary Fee Law to increase the automation fee that can be charged by the prothonotary's office in counties of the second class A and the third through eighth class, including home rule counties. The current maximum fee of $5 is increased to $10 for the initiation of any action or legal proceeding. The collected fees will be deposited into a special prothonotary automation fund, which is designated solely for the purpose of automation and ongoing updates to the prothonotary's office.
Additionally, the bill introduces provisions allowing for the automation fee to be increased once every three years, with the increase limited to the percentage change in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) over the preceding three years. This ensures that the fee can be adjusted in accordance with inflation while maintaining a structured approach to fee increases. The act is set to take effect 60 days after its passage.
