In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution recognizing June 2026 as “Aphasia Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.
Aphasia is a language disorder caused by stroke, brain injury or neurological disease.  Aphasia can affect an individual’s ability to speak, understand language, read or write.  Approximately 85% of aphasia is caused due to strokes, and other causes include traumatic brain injuries, brain tumors, degenerative disease and metabolic changes.  Different types or patterns of aphasia correspond to the location of the brain injury in individual cases.
In the United States alone, it is estimated that two to four million people are living with aphasia, with an estimated 800,000 Americans diagnosed with aphasia every year.
With this resolution, it is my hope that we can recognize aphasia and gain a better understanding of what it is and how it affects people.
I hope you will join me in bringing recognition for aphasia and support to those living with it by co-sponsoring this resolution.
