Pennsylvania is one of the states with the highest number of incarcerated youth. When these youth leave their place of incarceration, research suggests that they will likely have gained a significant amount of weight. While state-run facilities abide by federal standards and nutritional guidelines, private facilities may choose to cut costs when it comes to providing healthy food to the youth in their care. We believe that it is crucial that all kids receive the nutrition they need to stay healthy, regardless of their circumstances.

To that note, we intend to introduce a resolution that would direct the Joint State Government Commission to study the nutritional standards of juvenile justice facilities and diversion facilities in Pennsylvania. This study will seek to evaluate the nutritional guidelines put in place at the facilities to ensure that they are able to provide a healthy diet to the youth in their care.

Healthy eating habits form during our youth, so it is important that we ensure Pennsylvania’s youth are provided nutritious foods that will allow them to live a long, healthy life.

Please join us in co-sponsoring this important legislation to ensure our kids are receiving the nutrients they need and the support they deserve.
