I am introducing a resolution to officially designate July 17th as “717 Day” in the Commonwealth. This designation celebrates the South-Central Pennsylvania region that includes Harrisburg, Hershey, York, Lancaster, and many vital communities that connect them.
The shared 717 area code is an iconic cultural identifier for nearly 2 million Pennsylvanians. This region serves as a cornerstone of our state’s identity and economy. From the halls of the Capitol to the farms of Lancaster and the manufacturing plants of York, this region represents a diverse and industrious workforce.
This region is also a primary driver of Pennsylvania’s $30 billion tourism industry, drawing millions of visitors annually to its world class heritage sites, scenic valleys, and historic landmarks. Considering America’s 250th anniversary this year, acknowledging the historical significance of the 717 region is especially fitting.
This resolution is intended to serve as a call to action for residents and visitors alike to support local restaurants, farmers, artisans, and Main Street businesses that make this region a unique and wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family.
I invite you to join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to honor the heart of our Commonwealth.
