In the near future, we will introduce a resolution recognizing and honoring the 175th anniversary YMCA in the United States.

The YMCA’s historic contributions to American society are significant and enduring. The organization provided safe housing during the Industrial Revolution, pioneered night school and English as a Second Language instruction, and introduced innovations such as basketball and group swim lessons. It has also played vital roles in wartime humanitarian efforts, civic engagement through the Youth and Government program, and the establishment of traditions such as Father’s Day. In more recent decades, the YMCA has become the nation’s leading nonprofit provider of childcare and afterschool programming.

Pennsylvania has a particularly strong connection to the YMCA’s legacy. The first YMCA in the Commonwealth was chartered in Philadelphia in 1854, and today Pennsylvania is home to more YMCAs than any other state.

Across the Commonwealth and the nation, YMCAs continue to serve people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, providing programs in swim safety, youth sports, camping, fitness, and wellness—particularly for older adults. As community hubs, YMCAs play a critical role in addressing social isolation, fostering relationships, and creating inclusive environments where individuals can thrive.

Please join us in co-sponsoring this resolution to honor the YMCA’s enduring impact and continued service to the people of Pennsylvania and the United States.
