As technology continues to advance, the use of automated license plate readers has become more popular by law enforcement agencies, government agencies, and other private organizations. This technology can automatically read a license plate and check it against any public databases for owner information and legal violations.

Although a useful tool for law enforcement agencies, the use of these readers is currently unregulated which presents significant privacy concerns for our motorists. With no laws or regulations in force, there is nothing to prevent any collected data from being shared, sold, or used for unlawful and inappropriate purposes. Pennsylvania’s motorists deserve the peace of mind in knowing that their private information is actually being kept private.

To address this issue, I will be introducing legislation to limit how government agencies can use these readers, restrict how any collected data can be used, and require that any collected data be destroyed in a timely manner. Additionally, this bill will prohibit the use of these readers for surveillance and will ensure that any collected data cannot be shared for unlawful purposes. We must take steps to ensure that our data is safe and secure as the digital world continues to expand.

Please join me in cosponsoring this important legislation to protect the privacy of our motorists.
