In the near future, we plan to introduce a Senate Resolution in support of awarding Major Richard D. Winters the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Major Winters, a life-long Pennsylvania resident, is best known for his heroism in World War II through HBO’s Band of Brothers series.  Time and again, Winters and Easy Company were put in perilous situations from D-Day to the Battle of Carentan to Operation Pegasus to the winter in the Ardennes Forest to Hitler’s “Eagles Nest,” but each time found the resolve to persevere and move forward.

While there have been efforts to recognize Major Winters, this resolution will highlight his actions during the engagement at the Heteren Crossroads in Holland in 1944.  Major Winters’ actions during this operation reflect exemplary courage, decisive leadership under fire, and a commitment to his soldiers that has become emblematic of the highest traditions of American military service.  The engagement at the Crossroads showcased Major Winters’ ability to assess complex battlefield conditions, lead with clarity and discipline, and secure critical objectives against significant risk. His leadership not only contributed materially to the success of Allied operations in the region but also stands as an enduring example of duty and valor.

Recognizing individuals such as Major Winters helps ensure that future generations understand the sacrifices made by those who served and the profound impact of their actions on the course of history. His life and service continue to inspire countless Americans today.  Please join us in cosponsoring this resolution recognizing Major Winters’ contributions and the lasting legacy of those who fought with honor during World War II.
