On April 22, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) officially reclassified marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule III controlled substance. This change specifically applies to marijuana products approved by the FDA and those subject to a state-issued medical license.
As federal law now formally recognizes that marijuana has medical value and the new rules allow for a more streamlined process for entities holding state medical marijuana licenses, it is also necessary for other entities to recognize the medical value of cannabis and treat it accordingly.
As such, I will soon be introducing legislation requiring insurance companies to cover medical marijuana in Pennsylvania and invite you to join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
