For generations, our communities have been served by dedicated first responders, including police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, correctional officers, dispatchers, and other emergency personnel, who make daily sacrifices to keep us safe. While all of these individuals demonstrate extraordinary courage, some make the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives in the line of duty to protect others.
The families of these fallen heroes are often referred to as “Gold Shield Families,” a term used to honor those who have lost a loved one in the line of duty. While we rightly remember and honor the bravery of fallen first responders, it is equally important to recognize the profound and lasting impact their loss has on their families. The sacrifice made by these heroes is carried forward by those they leave behind.
Designating May 13 as “Gold Shield Family Day” in Pennsylvania would ensure these families receive the recognition and support they deserve, while also paying tribute to the first responders who gave their lives in service to our communities.
Please join us in cosponsoring this important resolution to establish May 13 as “Gold Shield Family Day” in Pennsylvania and to honor both the families of fallen first responders and the enduring legacy of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our Commonwealth.
