Pennsylvania’s commitment to preserving the Chesapeake Bay is vital to protecting one of our nation’s most significant natural resources. In recognition of the Bay’s importance to our environment, economy, and public health, we will soon introduce a resolution designating June 7-13, 2026, as “Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania.

As the largest and most productive estuary in the United States, the Chesapeake Bay boasts a 64,000-square-mile watershed that encompasses six states and the District of Columbia—and covers nearly half of our Commonwealth. The Susquehanna River, which supplies 50% of the Bay’s fresh water, underscores Pennsylvania’s pivotal role in safeguarding water quality for the entire region. When we invest in improving Pennsylvania’s waterways, we strengthen the overall health of the Bay and ensure its vitality for future generations.

Since 1983, the Chesapeake Bay Program—a collaborative effort among the watershed states, the federal government, and the Chesapeake Bay Commission—has led science-based policy initiatives to restore and protect the Bay. All residents of Pennsylvania are encouraged to observe Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week through events and educational programs that highlight the Bay’s importance to our Commonwealth, the region, and the nation.

Please join us in sponsoring this resolution and recognizing this remarkable national treasure. Your support will help advance our shared goal of a cleaner and healthier Chesapeake Bay for current and future Pennsylvanians.
Thank you for your consideration.
