In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating May 14, 2026 as IgA Nephropathy (IgAN) Awareness Day in Pennsylvania.

IgA Nephropathy —also known as IgA Nephropathy or Berger’s disease—is a rare autoimmune condition that attacks the kidneys and is a lesser-known cause of chronic kidney disease, which affects approximately one in seven Americans.

IgAN occurs when immunoglobulin A (IgA)—a protein that normally helps the body fight infection—builds up in the kidneys and clogs the filtering units. This buildup can lead to hematuria (blood in the urine) and proteinuria (protein in the urine) and, over time, may result in serious kidney damage. Currently, there is no cure, and many patients face lengthy delays in receiving a correct diagnosis. Existing treatments primarily slow disease progression, though ongoing research and several newly approved therapies have created renewed hope for patients.

By designating May 14 as IgA Nephropathy Awareness Day, we can help highlight the challenges patients face, support affected families, and promote awareness that may lead to earlier diagnoses and improved outcomes. Please join me in raising awareness for IgAN by supporting this resolution.
