Broadcast workers are not only individuals in front of the camera like the local news station reporter, anchor, sportscaster, or meteorologist, but also the producers and editors working behind the scenes for local television and radio stations. These individuals are too often subject to non-compete agreements with their employers. Non-compete agreements restrict broadcast workers from seeking other employment opportunities for a certain timeframe or in a specific geographic location. These restrictions keep broadcast workers from seeking out potentially better employment opportunities.
Our legislation would prohibit non-compete agreements in the contracts of broadcast workers if that agreement restricts the broadcast worker from moving to a new employer or performing services within a specific geographic area. This bill would also void any existing non-compete agreement between a broadcast worker and their employer.
Now more than ever, the public needs access to quality journalists and broadcasters. Non-compete agreements unfairly penalize these workers. Please join us in supporting our broadcasters by co-sponsoring this important legislation.
