We will soon introduce a resolution to recognize May 10th – 19th as “Go Public Gardens Days” in Pennsylvania to recognize the public garden industry and its contributions to our Commonwealth.
Pennsylvania’s public gardens and public horticulture institutions preserve thousands of acres of natural resources through conservation, restored forests, improved watersheds, and healthy private working lands. These areas include botanical gardens, cemeteries, zoological gardens, college and university campuses, historical homes and sites, urban greening organizations, and publicly owned parks.
Our public gardens are all open for all to enjoy and bring with them many visitors, approximately 4.2 million people annually, seeking enjoyment and education. These gardens are also staffed by trained professionals who maintain the collections of plants and flowers. This work requires a wide array of expertise, approaches, and solutions that are essential for biodiversity in food, agricultural cultivation, research, and community partnerships.
On average, public gardens and horticulture-centered entities generate a half-billion-dollars in economic impact here in Pennsylvania, employ more than 2,000 people, and significantly promote tourism. That is why this year, May 10th through 19th, 2026, is recognized nationally as “Go Public Gardens Days” to celebrate these impacts.
Please join us in recognizing May 10th - 19th, 2026 as “Go Public Gardens Day” to celebrate this important industry and all it does for our Commonwealth.
