I am preparing to introduce a resolution to designate June 16, 2026, as Merit Shop Day in Pennsylvania. The construction industry is one of the largest sectors of our national economy, employing more than five million individuals, with over 200,000 of those workers in Pennsylvania. Merit shop contractors, who represent approximately 90 percent of the industry, operate under the principles of free enterprise, open competition, and the selection of the most qualified contractors based on performance and value.

These contractors make significant investments in developing a highly skilled and safe workforce. Their registered apprenticeship programs have graduated thousands of apprentices across multiple trades.

Merit shop workers report strong career satisfaction, and their contributions support the construction and maintenance of essential infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, transportation systems, utilities, commercial facilities, and housing. Merit shop contractors also play a key role in promoting innovation, efficiency, and cost‑effectiveness through best practices in project planning, safety, and workforce development.

I hope you will join me in highlighting the dedication, professionalism, and impact of merit shop workers throughout Pennsylvania.
