Scoliosis is a musculoskeletal condition characterized by an abnormal curvature of the spine, affecting individuals of all ages – particularly adolescents during periods of rapid growth. If left untreated, scoliosis can lead to chronic pain, reduced lung function, physical limitations, and a diminished quality of life. Early detection, proper diagnosis, and timely treatment are critical to improving outcomes and preventing severe progression.

Despite its prevalence, public awareness of scoliosis remains limited. Increasing education and understanding of this condition can help ensure that more individuals are diagnosed early and receive appropriate care.

This resolution is also inspired by the work of a remarkable young constituent, Anna Von Hohen of Upper Makefield Township, a member of Girl Scout Troop 226 and a student at PA Virtual Charter School. Anna, who lives with scoliosis herself, is currently pursuing her Girl Scout Gold Award through a project titled “Beating the Bend.”

Through this initiative, Anna has demonstrated exceptional leadership and compassion by creating a support group for students living with scoliosis, launching an educational Instagram platform to raise awareness, and presenting her work to local Girl Scout troops. She has also partnered with advocacy organizations such as Higgy Bears and collaborated with her medical provider at Scoliosis 3DC in Boston to expand access to resources and support.

Anna’s efforts highlight the importance of community, education, and early intervention in addressing scoliosis and supporting those affected by it.

By designating June 2026 as “Scoliosis Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania, we aim to elevate public understanding of this condition, encourage early screening and treatment, and recognize the patients, families, caregivers, and advocates working to improve outcomes across the Commonwealth.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to support increased awareness and education surrounding scoliosis.
