I will soon introduce legislation to designate a bridge carrying State Route 61 over the Shamokin Creek in Mount Carmel Borough, Northumberland County as the Veterans Viaduct.

Originally constructed in 1930, the viaduct provided a direct route into town and eliminated the need to cross both the Pennsylvania and Lehigh Valley Railroad tracks. It allowed motorists to bypass the busy coal trains that frequently obstructed access to town. Despite the original rail lines no longer being in operation, the viaduct was rebuilt in 2003 and continues to serve as an important link that connects people to the community. In many ways, it reflects the role our veterans have played in uniting and strengthening our nation during both peace and conflict.

Through their courage and selflessness, veterans have made profound sacrifices in service to our country, placing the safety and freedom of others above their own. Naming this structure the Veterans Viaduct will ensure it stands not only as a physical bridge, but also as a lasting reminder and symbol of gratitude, respect, and the enduring legacy of those who have answered the call to serve.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation which pays homage to the rich history of Mount Carmel Area while honoring the men and women who selflessly served our nation, whose sacrifice and courage will never be forgotten.
