Firefighters work in some of the most dangerous conditions imaginable. While the risks of fire and structural collapse are obvious, one of the greatest threats they face is largely invisible: repeated exposure to cancer-causing chemicals.

Cancer is now one of the leading causes of firefighter line-of-duty deaths. Yet too many firefighters put off routine cancer screenings because deductibles, copayments, and other out-of-pocket costs make preventive care hard to afford.

This legislation creates a statewide program to ensure firefighters can receive annual cancer screening examinations at no cost when those services are not covered by their health insurance. The program applies to all firefighters—career and volunteer alike—so that access to lifesaving preventive care does not depend on employment status or department size.

By focusing on prevention and early detection, this legislation will save lives, reduce long-term healthcare costs, and demonstrate the Commonwealth’s commitment to protecting those who protect our communities.
