Businesses falling behind on remitting the sales tax often find it hard to catch up – especially while trying to stay current with incoming transactions. A recent pilot program the Department of Revenue successfully deployed to help these businesses offers software that collects sales and use tax in real time with each transaction and then remits it to the department, relieving the taxpayer entirely of the burden of handling sales and use taxes.
Using these software programs ensures 100% compliance. It’s no wonder the program was highly successful.  Three out of 4 participants liked the program so much they chose to continue using the software at their own expense after their term of participation ended. It offers key benefits that small businesses need – convenience, predictability, and automation.
We will soon be introducing legislation to codify this program, allowing the Department of Revenue to mandate use of this software for taxpayers with certain arrearages. The department would cover the cost for the first year of participation. Taxpayers whose mandatory period of participation ends would be permitted to continue voluntarily using the software for sales tax collection and remittance.
Please join us in taking this simple step toward easing the sales tax process for small businesses.
