The proliferation of smoke shops in our communities is a problem. As more smoke shops open in our communities, where they open becomes a concern. Smoke shops should not be easy for our children to access.
A Philadelphia zoning rule prohibits smoke shops from opening within 500 feet of K-12 schools. This rule was shown to reduce the number of tobacco retailers by 20% between 2017 and 2020. Building on this model, I will be introducing legislation to not allow new smoke shop licensees in Pennsylvania to open within 500 feet of a daycare center, K-12 school, youth center, or recreational spaces. My legislation will also not allow new smoke shop license to open within 500 feet of another smoke shop.
This legislation will help keep smoke shops away from where our children go to learn and play. Join me in protecting Pennsylvania children by co-sponsoring this important legislation.
