In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to extend the period of time that a member of the parole board may serve until a successor qualifies.

Under current law, the term of office for a member of the parole board is 6 years. Upon expiration of that term, the member is permitted to continue to serve for 90 days until the governor nominates (and Senate confirms) another individual to take that expired member’s place.

This transition period is vital to maintain the operation of the parole board, allowing it to continue doing its important work in rendering decisions on whether or not to release an inmate from state prison. Increasing this period of time will ensure that the board can continue in its operations should there ever be a delay in the confirmation process.

I ask that you join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
