This resolution commemorates the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, honoring the victims, first responders, and survivors, and ensuring that the lessons and legacy of that day are never forgotten.

On September 11, 2001, terrorists associated with the Al-Qaeda terrorist group carried out coordinated attacks on the United States, targeting the World Trade Center in New York City by high-jacking American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia by high-jacking American Airlines Flight 77, and United Airlines Flight 93, resulting in the killing of approximately 3,000 Americans.

The attack on the World Trade Center resulted in the deaths of approximately 2,753 people, including 343 firefighters, 37 Port Authority police officers, 23 New York City police officers, and other emergency personnel. The attack on the Pentagon claimed the lives of 184 individuals, including 125 in the building and 59 passengers and crew aboard American Airlines Flight 77. United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania, killing 40 passengers and crew members who heroically prevented further loss of life. In the years since, additional lives have been lost due to injuries and illnesses related to the attacks.

I encourage you to join me in cosponsoring this resolution to publicly affirm our commitment to remembering this pivotal moment in our Nation’s history and to highlight the importance of unity, resilience, and service in the face of adversity.
