Inspections play a critical role in both county and state correctional institutions by ensuring that incarcerated individuals receive humane treatment and that facilities are meeting their ethical and operational responsibilities. While county correctional institutions are overseen by boards of inspectors, no comparable independent oversight body exists for state correctional institutions.

To address this gap, I will be introducing legislation to establish Boards of Prison Inspectors. This legislation will create independent oversight bodies responsible for inspecting state correctional facilities and ensuring compliance with applicable standards.

Establishing Boards of Prison Inspectors will strengthen transparency, improve institutional performance, and enhance public confidence in the administration of our correctional system.

I encourage my colleagues to join me in supporting this legislation to ensure that our state correctional institutions remain safe, effective, and compassionate.
