Local government has always served as a significant body that serves both the Nation and the Commonwealth ever since its founding. These institutions are the cornerstone of which our democratic government is built. Pennsylvania’s counties, cities, boroughs, incorporated towns, and townships provide essential services including social welfare, road maintenance, police, fire, and emergency medical services.

The nearly 13 million people who call this commonwealth their home are supported by these critical and essential services that often go unrecognized. More than 140,000 county and municipal employees spend their days keeping us safe, healthy, and moving. Many people do these jobs without compensation, including more than 1,700 volunteer firefighters.

I encourage you to join us in acknowledging these selfless unsung heroes who serve communities across the Commonwealth by co-sponsoring our resolution—recognizing April 13 through 17, 2026, as “Local Government Week” and April 22, 2026, as “Local Government Day” in Pennsylvania.
