In the very near future, I plan to introduce legislation that strengthens protections for individuals and communities engaging in religious worship.
Across our Commonwealth, people of all faiths gather in houses of worship to practice their beliefs peacefully.  Unfortunately, there have been increasing incidents where these gatherings are disrupted, sometimes through intimidation, physical obstruction, or even threats of violence.  While the federal Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act provides some protections, it can be limited and does not always provide timely or localized remedies.
This bill creates a clear and enforceable state-level offense for anyone who, with intent to prevent or disrupt religious worship, engages in actions such as intimidating or threatening worshippers, physically obstructing the entrance or exit from a house of worship, or deliberately interfering with the ability of individuals to gather and worship freely.  These offenses will be subject to meaningful criminal justice enforcement at the state level, providing stronger and more immediate protection for faith communities all across the Commonwealth.
Freedom of religion is a cornerstone of our democracy.  Worshippers should feel safe and secure when practicing their faith.  By passing this legislation, we reinforce our commitment to protecting constitutional rights and ensuring that those who seek to disrupt or intimidate are held accountable.
Please join me in supporting this important measure to safeguard religious liberty and strengthen protections for all faith communities.
