Most educators annually spend up to $750 of their own money to purchase essential classroom supplies like pencils and pens, notebooks, craft supplies, computer equipment, snacks, and cleaning supplies because school districts cannot provide everything students need to be comfortable and engaged. During the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation spiked to its highest level in 40 years, and the cost of school supplies continues to rise while educator salaries remain stagnant.

Educators may claim federal income tax deductions for purchasing these supplies through the federal Educator Expense Deduction. Additionally, Pennsylvania educators may receive a state tax deduction for required but non-reimbursed employee expenses, but not all classroom expenses qualify. Other states like Arkansas, Illinois, and Missouri offer educator expense income tax deductions or credits, but Pennsylvania does not. Therefore, my legislation would model Illinois by providing a tax credit up to $500 for out-of-pocket classroom expenses.

I personally understand the hard work and sacrifices that educators face to ensure their classrooms are well-supplied. Prior to being state representative, I was an educator and counselor, which gave me the experience of knowing how school districts operate, what their greatest needs are, and the importance of their role in the lives of children. We need to do more to help our educators, and this is just one of the ways we can show our appreciation.

There is no greater responsibility that we have as a society than to ensure the next generations have the opportunity to live successful, healthy, and happy lives, and well-supplied classrooms help make a difference. Please join me in supporting Pennsylvania educators and students
