More than 1.8 million Pennsylvanians have a mental health condition, with 598,000 adults reporting that they did not receive needed mental health care due to cost, lack of insurance, or lack of access to mental health professionals. Mental illnesses are biologically based brain disorders, which can affect individuals of any race, religion, economic status, or age. Individuals with mental health conditions have the same needs and are guaranteed the same rights as all Americans, however, these individuals frequently experience discrimination in education, employment, and housing.

Proper identification and treatment of mental conditions, including peer and familial support, are proven to be effective and are vitally important to assist individuals in leading full, productive lives. For these reasons, I will be introducing a resolution that would recognize May 2026 as “Mental Health Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution that will help end the mental health stigma, increase awareness about mental health, and support the millions of individuals living with a mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder.
