We will soon be introducing a condolence resolution to honor the life and legacy of former Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Sandra Schultz Newman, who passed away on February 2, 2026, at the age of 87.
 
Graduating from Villanova University School of Law in 1972, Justice Newman began her professional career as the first woman to serve in the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office. She proceeded to spend two decades as an attorney in private practice before being elected judge of Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania in 1993 and 1995. In 1995, Justice Sandra Schultz Newman became the first woman ever elected to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, serving until 2006.
 
Throughout her historic tenure, Justice Newman served on numerous boards and committees, remained involved with Pennsylvania’s judicial community, and supported her alma mater through co-founding the Drexel University Thomas R. Kline School of Law and sitting on the executive board of Trustees of Drexel's College of Medicine.
