In the near future, we will be introducing legislation to create a license plate to honor Green Star Families in this Commonwealth.

We are facing a concerning trend in our country, and here in the Commonwealth. Veterans who served our country with pride and courage are struggling with mental health challenges that can be invisible, including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and traumatic brain injury. Without proper care and awareness, these challenges can intensify over time and ultimately increase the risk of suicide. Every day, an estimated 22 veterans lose their lives to suicide, with 6,407 veterans taking their lives in 2022. Since September 11, 2001, over 140,000 veterans have died by suicide, and is the second leading cause of death in veterans under age 45. Despite these alarming numbers, Green Star Veterans, veterans lost to suicide, are not properly recognized here in the Commonwealth.

These tragic deaths leave their families grieving, and without proper recognition for their loved one who served our country. Green Star Families work tirelessly to advocate for better understanding of service-related mental health challenges, and to fight for proper recognition of the Green Star Service Banner, a symbol to honor the families of veterans who die by suicide. Increasing awareness of veteran suicide is essential to encourage earlier intervention and support.

We have a duty to ensure that every veteran lost in connection with their military service is properly recognized, and to recognize their families in their efforts to achieve this goal.

In an effort to recognize Green Star Families, this legislation will make a Green Star Family plate available to families who lost a veteran to suicide as a result of their military service and will display the Green Star. Applicants must provide proper documentation and a fee of $20 to the Department of Transportation (PennDOT). The plate will serve not only as a symbol of remembrance, but also as a visible reminder of the ongoing mental health challenges faced by many veterans.

I hope you will join us in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
