Scleroderma is a rare group of autoimmune diseases that thousands of Americans face. The disease can cause rough or tight skin patches that are uncomfortable and restrict a person’s movement. Scleroderma can also restrict lung function, contribute to high blood pressure, and increase risk of heart failure. Scleroderma can impact anyone, and it occurs more often in women. As a relatively uncommon, yet deadly disease, it is our responsibility in the General Assembly to raise awareness about this condition.

Therefore, I plan to introduce a resolution designating June 29, 2026, as “World Scleroderma Day” and June 2026, as “Scleroderma Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. This recognition will raise awareness of scleroderma and educate our communities about its causes, symptoms, risk factors, and treatment options.

With the health of all Pennsylvanians in mind, it is imperative that we take the time to foster more awareness to address this issue across this Commonwealth. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution to recognize those affected by scleroderma.
