On the evening of January 31, 2025, Northeast Philadelphia experienced an unprecedented tragedy when a Learjet 55 medical aircraft crashed just moments after takeoff. The catastrophic accident and ensuing explosion near Roosevelt Mall claimed eight lives, injured twenty-three others, and scattered debris across many city blocks.

In the immediate aftermath, city, state, and federal officials coordinated a recovery effort unlike any in Northeast Philadelphia’s history. Our police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and hospital staff demonstrated extraordinary courage and professionalism. Their swift actions saved lives, restored safety, and exemplified the resilience of our community.

This resolution seeks to honor those everyday heroes—from doctors and nurses who healed the wounded, to firefighters who battled the flames, and to road crews who rebuilt Cottman Ave. Their selfless service reflects the strength and character of Philadelphia.

Nearly one year later, we remain inspired by stories of remarkable bravery, including Andre “Trey” Howard, age 10, who sustained a life-threatening head injury while shielding his younger sister from flying debris, and Ramesses Dreuitt, age 9, who endured 42 surgeries, including skin grafts and amputations, after suffering burns to over 90% of his body. Their courage and perseverance embody the spirit of hope that emerged from this tragedy.
