The average American citizen is exposed to many toxic chemicals both at work and at home.  There has been a growing concern over the various toxic ingredients in our food, air, soil, and products in our homes that have made Americans one of the sickest populations of any high-income nation.

Citizens, young and old, are urging leaders to make common-sense reforms to improve their lives and the lives of their children.  Though some of these issues can be complex, there are some logical and clear changes that can be made, especially when it comes to pesticides.

Paraquat, which is part of the first generation of commercial pesticides, has killed thousands of people across the globe.  It has been linked to Parkinson’s disease and childhood leukemia, and research has found that it can harm people both after a single exposure and after repeated, low-level exposures.  Even a small amount can be fatal.
Over 70 countries have banned its use, including the entire EU and China, where Paraquat is made.  Yet more than 10 million pounds of Paraquat is sprayed on American crops each year.  Other countries have found safer alternatives to Paraquat, and we think it’s time for Pennsylvania to do the same.

This bill is a companion to House Bill 1135, introduced by Representative Natalie Mihalek.

Please join me in sponsoring this bill to protect our farmers, agriculture workers, and citizens from this dangerous pesticide.
