To ring in the new year, I will soon introduce legislation to empower Pennsylvanians to take greater control of their physical and mental health by engaging in regular physical activity. Whether hitting the weights at the gym, swimming laps at the pool, or sweating it out in the cycling class, the benefits of exercise are innumerable.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, physical activity assists with weight management, improves mental health and cognition, and reduces the risk of many health issues, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and even some cancers.

Unfortunately, due to the rising costs of fitness facility memberships, these benefits are often unattainable to Pennsylvanians. Researchers estimate the average monthly cost of fitness facility membership ranges between $50 and $65 – money which many Pennsylvania residents need for other reoccurring expenses like groceries, rent, and utility bills.

Under my proposal, every Pennsylvania taxpayer would be eligible for a Physical Health Improvement Tax (PHIT) Credit of up to $1,000 to offset the rising costs of gym and health club memberships.
As the pace of life continues to increase unabated, this legislation will allow the Commonwealth to send a clear message about the importance of regular physical activity.
Please consider joining our colleague Representative Joe Hogan and me as we champion legislation to empower adults across Pennsylvania to take charge of their health and improve their fitness.
