In this new era, Pennsylvania stands at a crossroads. We are more digitally connected than ever, yet many of us feel increasingly isolated. As we reimagine what it means to build a healthy Pennsylvania, we must recognize that true well-being is more than physical health—it is emotional, occupational, interpersonal, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, cultural, and financial health, for both our Commonwealth and every constituent.

Our collective vision for a healthy Pennsylvania is rooted in the aspirations of all those who have sought to make the Commonwealth home from its earliest days. To be a state where every individual feels and obtains a deep sense of belonging, purpose, and realized opportunity. But today, loneliness and isolation threaten this vision.

In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General declared these issues a public health crisis, linking them to higher rates of disease, mental health challenges, and even premature death. The economic toll is staggering—social isolation among older adults alone costs Medicare $6.7 billion annually, and lonely workers cost employers $154 billion each year.

Humanity’s greatest technological advances have been made possible by our shared cultures, the free exploration of ideas, and the mutual trust forged through personal, face-to-face connections. Yet, while technology is undeniably powerful, it can never replace genuine human interaction. Social media and virtual meetings have transformed how we communicate, but often at the expense of deep, authentic relationships. If we are to realize the vision of a truly healthy Pennsylvania, we must act intentionally to restore and strengthen the social fabric that underpins every dimension of our well-being.

That’s why I will soon introduce legislation to establish the Commonwealth Commission on Social Connection (CCSC). This forward-thinking, interdisciplinary body will unite experts, community leaders, and stakeholders to advise and oversee statewide policies and programs that strengthen our connections—across neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, and digital spaces.

The CCSC’s work will touch every dimension of health:

- Emotional & Interpersonal: Reducing loneliness and fostering belonging.
- Occupational & Financial: Supporting healthier, more engaged workplaces.
- Intellectual & Cultural: Promoting lifelong learning and cultural understanding.
- Spiritual & Environmental: Encouraging purpose, meaning, and vibrant communities.
- Physical: Addressing the health impacts of isolation.

The CCSC will submit annual reports to the Governor and Legislature, ensuring accountability and adaptability as we pursue a healthier, more connected future.

Our tradition of rugged individualism has shaped us, but it cannot be the sole foundation of a thriving society. Now is the time to act—not out of fear, but with vision and fidelity to our Commonwealth. By establishing the CCSC, Pennsylvania will lead the nation in making connection a public good and community a shared and active responsibility.

Join me in co-sponsoring this transformative step toward a truly healthy Pennsylvania—proactively, purposefully, and together.
