In the near future, I will introduce a resolution recognizing and honoring the 150th anniversary of Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP).

Founded in 1875 as the Indiana State Normal School, IUP has evolved from a teacher-training institution into a doctoral research university known for its deep commitment to student success and achievement. In 1920, the school came under Commonwealth ownership, and in 1927, as it grew, the name was changed to Indiana State Teachers College. In 1959, it became Indiana State College, and finally, in 1965, it became Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Since its founding, IUP has been leading the future by reshaping what higher education can and should be by building on its 150 years of innovation, impact, and success. This is most noticeable through the institution’s proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine. This effort reflects IUP’s commitment to meeting critical workforce needs by preparing the next generation of physicians, while also addressing the current healthcare crisis particularly in rural Pennsylvania.

For all of these reasons, IUP is worthy of acknowledgement of these significant milestones and recognition of a legacy of educational excellence. Please join me to honor this historic anniversary by cosponsoring this resolution.
