In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution honoring Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s 150th Anniversary.
IUP was founded in 1875 as the Indiana State Normal School. In 1920, the school came under Commonwealth ownership, and in 1927, as it grew, the name was changed to Indiana State Teachers College. In 1959, it became Indiana State College, and finally, in 1965, it became Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Since its founding in 1875, IUP has evolved from a teacher-training institution into a doctoral research university recognized for its deep commitment to student success and achievement.
What makes IUP distinctive is the combination of strong academics, personal support, and a community where students feel they belong. Faculty know their students and guide them in the classroom, providing hands on experiences such as research, and internships that translate directly to career readiness.
As we celebrate IUP’s 150th anniversary in 2025, we honor a legacy of educational excellence while looking ahead to the next 150 years of student achievement, exploration, leadership in healthcare education, and public service. Building on its roots as a teaching college, the proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine reflects IUP’s commitment to meeting critical workforce needs by preparing the next generation of physicians for our communities.
A member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, IUP is leading the future of education by reshaping what higher education can be while honoring 150 years of innovation, impact, and student success. IUP remains steadfast in its mission to provide transformative educational opportunities, foster leadership, and strengthen communities across Pennsylvania and beyond. Its legacy of resilience, progress and service stands as a testament to the vision of its founders and the continued commitment of its faculty, staff, students, alumni, and supporters.
