Dear Colleagues –

In the near future, we plan to introduce legislation to modernize Pennsylvania’s farm vehicle law.

Currently, only type D farm vehicles are permitted to drive on highways at any hour, as they display a currently valid certificate of inspection. Type A, B, and C farm vehicles are not inspected and are restricted to operation between sunrise and sunset.  Historically, a reason for this nighttime limitation was the fear that these farm vehicles had inadequate lighting.

Today, the law creates a situation where a farmer with a Type A, B, or C farm truck can legally operate the vehicle at 6:45am or 5pm on some days of the year, but not others.  Operating a vehicle 10 minutes before sunrise is grounds for a violation.  Any farmer will tell you that farming can be a 24 hour a day occupation.  Modern vehicles with increased safety measures and modern lighting have lessened the need to be concerned about operating these vehicles at night.

With this in mind, we plan to introduce legislation to bring farm vehicle registration into the 21st century.  This legislation will create type AA, type BB, and type CC classifications for farm vehicles – which will be identical to their counterparts, type A, B, and C with the exception that the new classes of farm vehicle display a valid certificate of inspection and may be driven on highways without a restriction on daylight hours.

By creating the three new classes of farm vehicle, this legislation provides farmers the option to get farm vehicles inspected and able to be driven at any hour.  Farmers can choose to keep their farm vehicles as type A,B, or C if they do not wish to drive them at night.

Please join us in co-sponsoring this important legislation to allow farmers the ability to choose how to operate their farm vehicles.
