In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution to recognize and honor the 90th Anniversary of the Catholic War Veterans of the United States of America, and to commend their extraordinary record of service to faith, family, and country.
Founded in 1935 by Reverend Edward J. Higgins, a World War I veteran and parish priest from New York, the Catholic War Veterans (CWV) emerged as a beacon of faith and brotherhood for returning soldiers. Father Higgins sought to unite Catholic service members who shared not only a love of country, but a common spiritual calling. That same year, Pope Pius XI personally blessed the CWV’s flags and bestowed his Apostolic Blessing upon the organization, setting it apart as a sacred bridge between service to God and service to nation.
In 1940, the CWV was formally recognized by the U.S. Veterans Administration, and in 1984, it received a Congressional Charter, affirming its national significance and ensuring its enduring role among America’s leading veterans organizations.
For decades the CWV has dutifully served on the Pennsylvania State Veterans Commission to ensure optimal representation for Catholic war veterans across our Commonwealth.
Over the past nine decades, the CWV have served generations of veterans and their families—providing aid to the wounded, comfort to the bereaved, assistance with veterans’ benefits, and steadfast devotion to patriotic and charitable works. Their posts and auxiliaries across Pennsylvania have visited hospitals, supported parishes and schools, mentored youth, and honored the memory of the fallen.
Through their guiding motto, “For God, For Country, For Home,” the CWV have reminded us that patriotism and faith are not competing loyalties but shared virtues—each strengthening the other.
As the CWV celebrate their 90th year of service in 2025, this resolution would give the Commonwealth the opportunity to express its profound appreciation and respect for their unwavering commitment to veterans, their families, and their communities.
I invite you to join me in co-sponsoring this resolution honoring the CWV and their nine decades of faithful service to our nation and our Commonwealth.
