In Pennsylvania, consumers can choose their electric and natural gas supplier, allowing them to shop for the best prices. However, consumers are sometimes manipulated, having their utility supplier changed without their knowledge or consent. This deceptive practice, commonly known as "slamming” often results in higher rates and unexpected charges. While the practice is already illegal, there is more we can do to protect consumers.
To further prevent this practice from occurring, I intend to introduce legislation that would require third-party verification by utility companies when a customer initiates a change in supplier. Additionally, there would be a seven-day waiting period following the initiation, allowing time for a customer to catch and correct the switch if they are a victim of “slamming".
I urge you to join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. As public officials, we must protect all Pennsylvanians from these harmful practices and ensure a fair electricity and natural gas market.
