Speeding and dangerous driving remain a problem on highways and local roads across the Commonwealth, endangering pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists alike. It is time Pennsylvania aligns with every other state in the nation to allow local police departments the use of radar technology. Existing technology, ENRADD and VASCAR, are both less reliable and costly. Repairs to the device take considerable time and new devices will be harder to purchase as the company that makes ENRADD is reported to be slowing its operations.

Recent news coverage of incidents across the Commonwealth has demonstrated the need for this improved technology in local police departments. Salisbury Township recorded drivers traveling at speeds between 60-70 mph, more than 20 miles per hour over the posted limit of 40 mph. These incidents are not isolated in Salisbury. In residential areas, near schools, and on local roads around Pennsylvania, speeding and dangerous driving has become an increased problem, leading to potentially deadly results.

We will soon introduce legislation that builds upon proposals that have passed with majority support in past sessions in both chambers and apply it to full-time local police patrols as a starting point. Revenue-generating prevention language will remain in the proposal, as will mandatory training provisions and the inclusion of a municipal opt-in ordinance process.

The legislature can create safer roadways for our constituents by giving law enforcement officers the tools they need to enforce laws efficiently and effectively. Please join us in co-sponsoring this renewed legislative effort to protect our community members.
