In the near future, I will introduce a resolution designating November 14, 2025, as “World Diabetes Day” in Pennsylvania. This resolution is substantially similar to Senate Resolution 371 of the 2023-24 Legislative Session.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that impairs the body’s ability to convert food into energy. It occurs when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or when cells become resistant to it, leading to high blood sugar levels.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of August 2021–August 2023, 15.8% of U.S. adults have diabetes (11.3% diagnosed, 4.5% undiagnosed). About 38% of adults—nearly 98 million people—have prediabetes, with over 80% unaware of their condition.

Significantly, new CDC data estimates that nearly one-third of adolescents (ages 12–17)—around 8.4 million young people—had prediabetes in 2023. Although experts caution that the CDC lacks enough data and review, the figure aligns with rising obesity rates and has prompted calls for increased screening and early intervention.

This rise in diabetes is linked to various health complications, including heart disease, kidney issues, nerve damage, and mental health concerns. While there is no cure, risk factors can be managed through a healthy diet, physical activity, and prescribed medications.

Previous cosponsors of SR 371 were: Senators Brewster, Brown, Cappelletti, Comitta, Costa, Culver, Dush, Haywood, Hughes, Miller, Vogel and Judy Ward.

I invite you to co-sponsor this resolution and help raise awareness about maintaining a healthy lifestyle to combat the growing prevalence of diabetes in Pennsylvania.
