This bill amends the Public School Code of 1949 to establish requirements for the use and maintenance of opioid antagonists in schools. It mandates that within 90 days of the bill's effective date, the Department of Education, in consultation with the Department of Health, must develop a policy requiring all school entities that offer grades nine through twelve to provide and maintain opioid antagonists on-site. The policy will include guidelines for responding to suspected opioid overdoses, training requirements for designated individuals responsible for the opioid antagonists, and specifications on the quantities and types of these medications to be maintained.
Additionally, the bill outlines that trained school nurses, employees, or other individuals may administer opioid antagonists during school hours to students or staff experiencing suspected overdoses. It ensures that at least one trained individual is present at each school facility during the school day and provides for the safe storage of opioid antagonists. The bill also includes provisions for liability protection for school personnel administering these medications and allows school entities to utilize various funding sources for compliance. The act is set to take effect 60 days after its passage.
