In a democracy, public trust is the foundation of good governance. Too often, that trust is eroded when elected officials are allowed to accept gifts, perks, or favors from those seeking to influence them. It’s time we draw a clear line.
Pennsylvania is one of a few states without a comprehensive gift ban, despite strong public support for one. Because of this, I plan to introduce a Senate companion bill to Representative Solomon’s House Bill 744. This legislation would prohibit elected officials, public employees, and candidates for public office from accepting any cash gifts or gifts exceeding $50 in total from a single source per calendar year.
A comprehensive gift ban is one step towards restoring faith in our institutions and ensuring that public service remains rooted in the public interest, not private gain. With that said, I am proud to join Representative Solomon in introducing this legislation. I see this as a critical step toward restoring public trust in our government.
Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
