Across our state, municipalities regularly mandate that various new and existing developments provide a minimum number of parking spaces to accommodate the vehicles that are expected to use such developments. However, while such measures may make it easier to find parking, they also significantly raise rents and development costs. Further, this required parking takes up space that could otherwise be used for housing or revenue-generating commercial purposes.

Such mandatory parking minimums are an outdated policy that cause more harm than good for our state’s residents and visitors. That is why we plan to introduce legislation to prohibit municipalities in Pennsylvania from having minimum vehicle parking requirements. Such a measure will help to lessen our dependence on automobiles while making it easier and cheaper to build residential dwellings to combat our state’s ongoing housing shortage.

Numerous states have already taken action to lessen the prevalence of parking minimums, including California, Colorado, and Florida. We ask that you help to free Pennsylvania residents and developers from this unnecessary burden by supporting this important legislation.
