This annual designation honors the rich history and contributions of the Erie, Haudenosaunee, Lenape, Munsee, Shawnee and Susquehannock on whose tribal lands our commonwealth exists.
 
We have arrived at a time when more people have come to acknowledge the simple fact that we need no longer celebrate a man who never stepped foot on the mainland of what is now the United States of America in his failed attempt to find a quicker route to India on behalf of Spain.
